Kaufman was founded as “Kings Fort”, named after Dr. William P. King who established the fort in 1840 after purchasing 2.5 square miles of land where the city is now located. The community was renamed “Kingsboro” after five years of growth. In 1852, it was renamed to “Kaufman” as we know it today. Kaufman is located 30 miles southeast of Dallas, and makes for a quick trip into the city via State Highway 175. Though it has a small town town feel, the county has been doing a major overhaul of the city center and surrounding roads to constantly improve the area. In addition, the city is growing everyday with new homes as well as new commercial buildings being built around town. Though the growth is visible, much of Kaufman is still surrounded by ranches, farms, and rural estates. The combination of new growth and rural outskirts give this city the perfect blend of city and country.
